“External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, had spoken to His Excellency, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Foreign Secretary of the Republic of the Philippines on July 6 when she had conveyed her deepest sympathies and condolences over the tragic loss of life and property in the city of Marawi,” the statement said.
“Minister Swaraj expressed the solidarity of the people of India with the Filipino people in their fight against terrorism and offered India’s assistance to supplement the ongoing rehabilitation efforts,” it further said.
The two officials also discussed the upcoming India-ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting which will be held in Manila in August.
The European Union also swore to donate P49 million for humanitarian aid to Marawi despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s early decision to reject aid from the said organization.
Earlier, China contributed P20 million for relief operations in Marawi and P5 million for families of fallen soldiers. Beijing also donated P370 million worth of arms for soldiers.
The South Korean government also extended its support through donating P5 million.
The ongoing clash in Marawi broke out last May 23, which prompted President Duterte to declare martial law in Mindanao.
On June 4, martial law in Marawi was approved by a majority vote from Supreme Court Justices. The declaration is slated to last only until July 22. However, President Duterte has said that only the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police can determine when the right time to lift martial law actually is.
